The enemy is within…

… and with that, the new world comes crashing in! BANG. Can you believe what you’re looking at? On THIS blog?

I had about three things I wanted to write here, and now I can’t remember ANY of them. No, I can, and I miss the days when I used to write interesting amusing things. There’s a big train of thought brewing, a 5,000-word essay, and no time to put it to rest. The raw ingredients are Mamma Mia!, Il Divo, The Iron Lady, Les Enfants du Paradis, probably a few other things, Hovis commercials, and the video above.

To be honest, it actually came as both a slight relief – Streep is just too surreal (though possibly no more so than Richard E Grant?!) – and a salutary reminder. I admit, however, that I have been unable to bear to watch the whole thing. I quailed at the fake nice voice. (I know. Not very far in.)

Hat tip to Bob and Roberta Smith on Facebook for the link.

But I’m busy, anyway. At home, on my own, at the desk – not much variety – but doing things. Listing, organising, pitching, researching, writing, planning, prepping. I’ve got loads to sort out, suddenly. The inbox groweth. The enemy IS within, because I should have been sitting here clearheadedly typing and thinking great concise thoughts since 7.30am. And tonight term starts. So I’ll leave you to do the dot-to-dots yourself…

But first, to redress the balance:

Dear Katy

I watched Meryl Streep in ‘Sophie’s Choice’ and couldn’t believe how wooden she was. I’ve only ever seen her turn in one decent acting performance which was in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. Wild horses wouldn’t be able to drag me to see her much hyped portrayal of our ex-leaderene.

Best wishes from Simon

Oh, God – Sophie’s Choice. I’d forgotten that particular horror.
